Lionsgate, the entertainment company that has brought us films like American Psycho, Dogma and the Saw series, has announced a major investment in Telltale Games, whose games based on major IPs such as the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones series have been critically acclaimed. While most of the details of the deal have not been released, Lionsgate has said it will be a significant investment and that chief executive Jon Feltheimer will be joining Telltale’s board of directors.
This deal opens the doors for a number of very successful licensing deals for existing properties. Aside from the above-mentioned titles Lionsgate has rights to The Expendables, Dredd, Kick Ass, the TV series Mad Men and the best selling book and movie series The Hunger Games, all of which would make incredible Telltale Games, though other lucrative titles like Dirty Dancing and Twilight might seem like good ideas for a profit.
We look forward to seeing what will come from this deal and how much control will be asserted from Telltale’s new partner. There are ways it can go wrong, but there is so much potential here I’m willing to be optimistic.
