The new virtual reality device, which yesterday revealed it’s final consumer model and its paired controller, will also be adding some incredible software. Three companies in particular have benn named: Square Enix, developers of the long-lasting Final Fantasy franchise, Insomniac Games of Spyro and Ratchet & Clank fame, and The Order: 1886 developer Ready at Dawn are all signed up to produce games for the new system.
These three join the current list of studios like Climax Studios and Harmonix in bringing the enhanced reality headset into real contention. Purchased by Facebook for $2 Billion in March of last year and originally a Kickstarter project back in 2012, this announcement along with the release date seem to show Oculus is ready to compete with Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
The system will function through an interface called Oculus Home, which will function much like Steam, integrating both the store and software launcher in one application.
The Oculus Rift will go on sale Q1 next year, according to yesterday’s announcement. A price has not been currently announced.
