Bethesda Softworks, publisher of games such as Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, held their first E3 conference this year. Unfortunately, it may also be their last.
Vice President Pete Hines was pretty clear on his feelings, stating “I don’t know if we’ll do one next year…I don’t know if we’ll do one again.” He also cited a focus on focusing more on making the games they have better and the fact that they would continue to have their booth in the event.
It makes sense as to why they may be hesitant to do a conference every year: their last Fallout game came out five years ago, their popular IP, Dishonored, is getting its first sequel four years later, and main Elder Scrolls games tend to have multi-year development cycles. Considering all three of their most popular series had impressive showings, along with Doom’s return and a new IP, Battlecry, this was a year that it made sense to have a conference.
While it does seem unlikely that we will see a repeat conference next year, we can always hope that when the stars align and they have enough games to show, Bethesda will pull off another stunning conference. Time will tell.
